Supreme Court to hear 2 Texas Death Row appeals
The cases of two Death Row inmates from the Dallas area, including a member of the Texas Seven, will be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court, the court said this week.
Donald Newbury and Ivan Cantu are appealing their death sentences on the grounds that they had deficient legal help during initial appeals.
Newbury, 49, is one of six prison escapees convicted in the fatal shooting of Irving policeman Aubrey Hawkins on Christmas Eve 2000 outside a sporting goods store. His first execution date was Feb. 1, but he won a reprieve as the Supreme Court considered an Arizona case that raised the same issues. That inmate won his appeal this month, so the justices agreed to hear Newbury's case.
